Process

My collaborators and I at Joylab, an arts collective, were offered the opportunity to create an experience that would transport people to a place of calm.

When we saw the bathroom, fell in love.

Two brainstorming sessions led us to a theme the client approved of: clouds.

Two brainstorming sessions led us to a theme the client approved of: clouds.

We discussed some key moments, like “rain” and “rainbow,” as well as the need for good sound design.

I fleshed out the concept with projection mapped “windows,” and created a complete picture of the experience and interactions for the client.

I created the circular windows on the CNC, specified and installed the projector, as well as executed the projection mapping. I also dove in and wrote the code for the Teensy, which manages all of the sensors, sound and lighting.

My partner Anthony Bui took on much of the work wiring the sensors and installing the LEDs, while other colleagues designed the cloud, entrance, sound and video content. While we originally wanted to be ambitious and create an actual water feature to make the cloud rain, we settled on a lighting animation instead for the sake of time and cost.
